Usually, when the media ask “Why Do People Think Collection Agencies Are Sketchy?,” it has the same ring that a bully’s “Why are you hitting yourself?” has. If people think collection agencies are sketchy, the media have certainly not done the industry any favors.

Blogger Meredith Wood over at Business2Community put together a list of three reasons why she thinks collection agencies have a bad rep:

1. Ruined Customer Relationships
2. Non-Transparent Pricing
3. Lawbreaking

But! “However, not all collection agencies are bad. It’s simply about asking the right questions to make sure you find an agency that values the relationship you have with your customers, is upfront and honest about their fee and takes the rules seriously.”

We asked yesterday how to make make sure there are more Renée Wilson’s in the world (“My Shocking First Month as a Debt Collector“) and fewer Khemall “Kenny” Jokhoos (“Rogue Debt Collectors: What’s to be Done?“) — how do we rehabilitate the industry’s image?

Is there anything of value in Wood’s musings? Let us know in the comments below.
