The National Association of Retail Collection Attorneys (NARCA) is holding its 2012 Fall Collection Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 17th through October 22nd at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront.  Registration and hotel information can be found on NARCA’s website.

In addition to providing a collegial venue for meeting with colleagues and clients, the conference will provide a variety of CLE-approved educational sessions with topics to include:

  • New state rules affecting debt collection and unfolding trends across the country;

  • Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) supervision and examination;

  • Due diligence in the hiring of process servers;

  • Minimal damage awards and what courts and juries look at in awarding damages;

  • Ethics complaints, the unauthorized practice of law and supervision of non-lawyer employees;

  • FDCPA liability for claims that arise out of the dismissal of debt collection lawsuits;

  • Class action defense strategies and current trends in class action lawsuits.

The Keynote Session will feature Corey Stone, Assistant Director for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Office of Deposits, Cash, Collections and Reporting Markets.  His team works across all of the Bureau’s divisions to build market intelligence, develop policy options, and coordinate industry outreach in the consumer reporting, debt collection, money services, and retail deposits product markets.  The keynote session is closed to the media.

Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler is also a featured speaker at the conference.  Since taking office in 2006, Attorney General Gansler has focused on environmental, consumer, and public safety issues.  Attorney General Gansler is also President of the National Association of Attorneys General and served as Chair of the Democratic Attorneys General Association until becoming President-Elect at the national organization.

The National Association of Retail Collection Attorneys (NARCA) is a nationwide trade association of over 700 skilled debt collection law firms and in‐house counsel of creditors.  NARCA’s members are required to adhere to a strict Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics.  Each attorney employed by a NARCA law firm member is licensed by one or more state’s highest court and is governed by Rules of Professional Conduct that are enforced by a mandatory grievance procedure.  NARCA members are committed to the fair and ethical treatment of all participants in the debt collection process.
