A bill that has passed the Washington State House would require collection agencies to clearly identify the original creditor when attempting to get payments on past due accounts, NPR reports.

The bill was proposed in response to various stories last fall which explored whether debtor’s prisons were coming back into fashion in the U.S.

The bill, which is now before the Washington State Senate, did not go as far as its sponsor, Derek Stanford (D-Seattle), had hoped. But he vowed to keep the pressure on the accounts receivable management community.
