Professional Credit Service (PCS), a Hawes Financial Group Company and a leading debt collection agency, participated in United Way’s 2013 Day of Caring on Wednesday, September, 18th at the Grassroots Garden in Eugene, OR.

A total of 41 PCS employees rolled up their sleeves to weed, shovel dirt, and prep the community’s Grassroots Garden. The Grassroots Garden produces fresh vegetables for food banks, emergency food boxes, free kitchens in the county and sometimes for children’s lunch programs in the parks during the summer. The morning volunteers were treated to a delicious vegetarian lunch made with produce from the garden. It is customary for the Grassroots Garden to serve home-made lunch to its volunteers daily.

“It’s great to work for an organization that has a genuine and continuing interest in the community around it,” said Steve Quinn, web/graphics designer for PCS. “After now having participated in the United Way Day of Caring several times over the past few years, I’ve only seen the enthusiasm and support grow with every event.”

PCS encourages its employees to volunteer in the communities in which they live and work. To support this effort, the ReachOut Program was established to give each employee the opportunity to take up to 40 hours annually of paid time to volunteer their time to meaningful organizations.

Over 450 volunteers from various companies in Lane County spent part of their regular workday helping 35 Lane County nonprofit organizations. Noreen Dunnells executive director and CEO of United Way of Lane County estimated that, based on an average daily wage of $21 per hour, the volunteers’ employers contributed a total of $37,800 in employee work time to the community throughout the day.

The Grassroots Garden is run almost entirely by volunteers and harvests over 55,000 pounds of produce each year which is a significant increase from the 4,000 pounds they produced in 2004.
