HOUSTON — In the midst of a struggling economy and reduced charitable giving nationwide, The Mission of Yahweh women’s shelter in Houston received a special gift this Christmas.

Employees of United Recovery Systems, a leading account receivables management company, recently donated over $27,000 to the Houston-based home for women in crisis.

"United Recovery Systems and its employees have always been there for us," said Betty Godso, mission volunteer development manager. "They help us throughout the year with food and clothing, but this gift is a real blessing when we need it most. We continue to ask God to bless them."

Godso noted that an anonymous donor had agreed to match the company’s donation, bringing the total contribution to well over $50,000.

JoAnn Snook, a United Recovery Systems collections manager who spearheads the effort internally, says their relationship with The Mission of Yahweh started when a co-worker agreed to be a Big Sister to two boys from the shelter. "Some people started buying the boys Christmas gifts, and it just grew and spread around the company from there," said Snook.

Godso said such smaller shelters as The Mission are sometimes forgotten, but still do as much work as larger organizations. The Mission of Yahweh, for example, clothes, feeds, and supports more than 1,600 residential stays each month and donates food, school supplies, and other necessities to thousands of area residents. A non-denominational Christian organization, the primary focus of The Mission is not only to provide a refuge for women in need but also to train and rehabilitate women so they can become self-sufficient, productive members of society.

Snook said that while the donation effort is based in Houston, contributions came in from five of United Recovery Systems’ six offices representing some 1,400 employees. "I feel really touched by the generosity of our employees this year," she said. "We are very lucky and comfortable compared to so many who have nothing, and this outpouring just warms my heart."
