The U.S. isn’t a country built on haggling, except in rare cases and we all can spend hours talking about how awful dealing with car salespeople can be. (No offense, car salespeople. It’s not your fault you’re the worst.) Dealing with that kind of price-point opacity may be — okay, not great but at least fine when dealing with luxury items like a car (and yes: your car is a luxury item and I can explain to you why later and I know you think public transportation is unreliable and yet thousands of people use it daily to get to work and don’t you shake your head at me); but it’s inexcusable when we’re talking about something as vitally necessary as healthcare.
