During our Research Assistant Peer Call this week we talked about California AB 1020 which requires agencies to supply the consumer with a copy of the hospitals’ “goodbye letter” and its financial assistance application with the validation notice.

While many agencies are still working out how to meet the requirements, a few research assistant members have determined how they are going to comply. One agency has two ways they send this information to the consumer.

  1. They use the account data provided in the placement to recreate the “goodbye letter” and pull the financial assistance application from the hospital’s website.

  2. They receive a PDF of all the “goodbye letters” associated with the placement file and upload those to the accounts using an RPA (robotic process automation). In these instances, they already have a blank financial assistance application on file.

A suggestion was made to include a watermark that says “COPY” if you have to recreate the “goodbye letter” and that email may be a good solution for sending this packet to consumers.

What if your agency isn’t the 1st placement agency? You’ll need to have the client send out a second or third “goodbye letter” depending on where you fall in the line for placements. Whether you’re receiving first, second, or tertiary placements, getting this information requires good communication with your California hospital clients which may not be an easy or quick process.

Be patient and persistent!
