This week, a peer member was navigating the development of their policy on utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) within their organization. They faced challenges in addressing laws, regulations, and ethics due to the current lack of concrete guidelines in the United States for this emerging technology. This conversation evolved into a more fundamental problem: the rapid pace of technological change outstrips our ability to keep up. How can we adequately address this within our policies and procedures? This is where the formation of an AI Risk Committee discussion came up, and since our meeting I have spent some time researching what this committee’s purpose and structure should look like and here is what I found:
AI Risk Committee Purpose and Goals
- Your organization’s primary objective should be to oversee the ethical, secure, and compliant use of AI technologies within your organization. Set goals such as, ensuring AI transparency, mitigating bias, safeguarding data privacy, and maintaining regulatory compliance.
- Ensure you appropriately document and communicate the committees’ responsibilities including; policy development, establishing regular risk assessments, incident management and continuous monitoring of AI systems.
Cross-departmental and Diverse Team
- You will want to establish a robust and diverse team to be a part of this committee including data scientists, legal counsel, compliance, IT, and operations.
- This team needs to be able to identify how to leverage AI technology ethically, compliantly, and securely.
Establish Your Governance Framework
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for using AI, covering areas like data security, AI model validation, bias mitigation, and transparency.
- Make this part of your risk assessment process at least annually if not more frequently.
Risk Management
- Create a risk management framework to identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with AI deployment.
- Conduct regular risk assessments to evaluate the potential impacts of AI on business operations, data privacy, and customer interactions.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain thorough documentation of AI models, including their development, training data, decision-making processes, and performance metrics.
- Establish a reporting mechanism to keep relevant stakeholders and Board of Director’s informed about the AI Risk Committee’s activities and findings.
Mitigating Biases
- Develop strategies to identify and mitigate biases in AI models, ensuring fair and equitable treatment of all customers.
- Regularly test AI systems for biases and adjust models as necessary to eliminate discriminatory practices.
Audit Controls
- Implement regular audits of AI systems to ensure compliance with established policies and regulations.
- Use audit results to refine and improve AI governance practices continuously.
Implementing an AI Risk Committee is a proactive step towards responsible AI integration in debt collection. By following these best practices, your agency can harness the benefits of AI while ensuring ethical, secure, and compliant operations. This commitment to responsible AI use will not only enhance your operational efficiency but also build trust with your customers and stakeholders.
