News in the ARM industry never stops and sorting out what’s news and what’s noise can be a challenge. That’s where insideARM’s weekly recap comes in. Our weekly recap of top stories will give you the news we found most interesting last week and, more importantly, why we think it’s relevant. Last week, we brought you news about what the Government Accountability Office (GAO) thinks about the CFPB’s reorganizing and downsizing, an update about the CFPB resuming virtual examinations, and insights into the risks of outbound AI calls.
On Tuesday, we brought you news from Ballard Spahr about the GAO’s recent assessment of the effect of recent stop-work orders, workforce reductions, contract terminations, and other related actions on the CFPB’s ability to fulfill its statutorily mandated functions. On Thursday, we published news from Orrick about the CFPB resuming virtual examinations in 2026. While neither of these CFPB updates includes action items for ARM industry stakeholders, taken together, they serve as a reminder that the CFPB still exists. Even though it may seem like the CFPB isn’t doing much right now, these developments are important as we look to the future for the CFPB and the states that are trying to fill the void. The CFPB may be weakened, but it isn’t gone.
On Wednesday, we shared insights from a recent insideARM Research Assistant call regarding the risks associated with outbound calls from AI agents. The conversation was sparked by a member sharing an interaction with an AI vendor who was excited about using AI agents to intentionally run outbound campaigns to call spouses (with no mention of consent). The conversation progressed into an analysis of which laws this action might violate and what the ramifications might be. New technology is exciting. It offers new and more efficient ways to do business; however, the discussion here illustrates why it’s imperative to include caution, critical thinking, and compliance alongside innovation.
