Today, March 13, 2013, The National List of Attorneys published the white paper on debt collection law in Nebraska, written by attorney Kent A. Schroeder, Partner, Ross, Schroeder & George, LLC. The firm has been located in Kearney, Nebraska, since 1987, and the bricks used in the construction of the building came from the streets of Lexington, NE. They have been members of The National List since 1988.

The Nebraska state slogan is “Possibilities…Endless.” At Ross, Schroeder & George, they take that slogan to heart. “The energetic lawyers at Ross, Schroeder & George, LLC exemplify the spirit of our emerging global culture and its demanding pace and substance. In our ever-changing, fast-paced world, our clients must meet legal challenges with adequate legal expertise. We have earned a reputation with our clients as exceptional, hard-working, hands-on attorneys who are always on-call.”

Kent has practiced law in Nebraska for 45 years. He received his Bachelor’s Degree at Iowa State University and his Juris Doctor from the University of Nebraska College of Law. His caseload is diverse but his primary area of practice is domestic litigation. Ten to twenty percent of his law practice is dedicated to debt collection. He is a frequent lecturer at Nebraska Continuing Legal Education – Family Law Seminars. He also serves on the Board of Regents for the University of Nebraska.

Kent’s past community activities include:

  • Board Member, Kearney Chamber of Commerce

  • Board Member, Kearney Country Club

  • Member and President, Kearney Cosmopolitan Club

  • Board Member, Nebraska Association of Trial Attorneys

  • Board Member, Central Community College

  • Member, Kearney City Council – Past Vice-President

  • Board of Directors, Good Samaritan Health Systems – Past Chairman

  • Board of Directors, Nebraska Continuing Legal Education, Inc.

  • Member Kearney Board of Education – Past President

  • Board of Directors, Sentinel Health Care

Debt collection work has taught Kent that “some vendors do not properly identify who they are doing business with. For example, are they doing business with a legal entity (in which case they should obtain personal guarantees) or a sole proprietor?” He likes learning something new every day.

Kent told us one thing creditors need to know that makes debt collection unique in Nebraska is, “You can execute across county lines but you cannot garnish across county lines.” From the paper, we also learned, “An attorney who is admitted and regularly practices in another state or territory may, on motion, be admitted to practice in Nebraska for the purpose of said business, only provided that the attorney associates with a Nebraska attorney. Association with a Nebraska attorney is not necessary if the visiting attorney practices in a state that allows a Nebraska attorney the same privilege.”

Kent and his wife live in Kearney, Nebraska. They have three grown children. When he’s not working he enjoys woodworking, golf and fishing. Outside of work, Ross, Schroeder & George supports the United Way, Shriners and the YMCA.

The National List thanks Kent for submitting this paper and for telling us something about himself and his firm. You can access the paper at http://www.nationallist.com/white_papers/nebraska.
