The top tax writer in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday vowed to crack down on abuse of tax breaks on donations to charities that he says enrich companies and executives at the expense of those in need and taxpayers.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley, an Iowa Republican, said charitable giving reforms would be part of legislation implementing President Bush’s faith-based initiative that will allow religious groups to receive federal grants for job training and other social programs.
The initiative is also designed to spur more charitable giving through tax incentives. But Grassley told a tax executives conference that lawmakers “have a duty to make sure charitable donations actually help those in need.”
