West Virginia Looks to Privatize Debt Collection

PARKERSBURG, WV – West Virginia Gov. Bob Wise is willing to privatize public employees, college dorms and even state land in an effort to cut government spending, his Tax and Revenue chief told lawmakers Monday according to a report by the Associated Press.

“These are not policy decisions. These are just suggestions,” Secretary Brian Kastick told participants in a meeting of a joint Finance subcommittee.

Kastick also suggested that the outsourcing of janitorial services, debt collection efforts, warehouse staff and similar areas could help. Other states have cut these costs without sacrificing vital services, he said. “We have to be very careful with what services we’re talking about,” Kastick said. “Outsourcing is not the end-all, be-all, but it can be a tool for saving money.”
