S. Carolina Beats Out Charlotte for New Citi Collections Center

South Carolina lured Citigroup Inc. over the state line to Fort Mill with what could amount to roughly $4 million in cash grants and $6 million in tax credits, the S.C. Commerce Department has told the Observer.

And that’s a conservative estimate.

The incentive totals provided by the state — which would be doled out over years — assume Citigroup staffs its new CitiFinancial operations center with 800 workers.

CitiFinancial expects to move roughly 700 employees now working in two Charlotte facilities to the Fort Mill center and to hire another 800 or more new workers, said CitiFinancial spokesman Robert Julavits.

The 165,000-square-foot CitiFinancial facility will include customer service, collections and other workers for its consumer-credit business.
