ChoicePoint Net Rises Despite Charge for ID Theft

ChoicePoint Inc., a provider of identity-verification services, on Wednesday posted a higher quarterly profit, despite a charge to cover the costs of a major break-in to its customer databases.

ChoicePoint, which maintains personal profiles of nearly every U.S. consumer, last month halted the sale of some of its information products containing sensitive consumer data, including social security and driver’s license numbers.

The move followed ChoicePoint’s announcement in mid-February that identity thieves had gained access to a database of personal records compiled by the company. The numbers of profiles ranged around 145,000, the company said.
