HSBC, Barclays Probe Possible Data Theft From India Call Center

By Jonathan Rosenthal, Bloomberg

HSBC Holdings Plc, Barclays Plc, and Lloyds TSB Group Plc are investigating claims that customer account details may have been sold by a former call center worker in India to an undercover reporter amid a probe by London police.

City of London police contacted lenders yesterday about claims that data had been stolen and sold to the Sun newspaper, said police spokeswoman Orna Joseph, who declined to identify the banks. Spokesmen from HSBC, Barclays and Lloyds TSB, three of the U.K.’s five top lenders, today said that the banks are probing the claims.

“There has been a compromise to security when it comes to personal account details,” Joseph said in a telephone interview. “We are looking at what’s been given to us by the Sun and we are conducting an investigation based on this information.”
