July 10 and 11 will see the first annual Process Serving Standards Summit, a gathering of industry thinkers with the goal of creating a set of voluntary standards for those serving legal papers connected with the collection industry.

The Summit is the creation of Scott Levine, President of JJL Process Corp. “In some ways, the process serving industry is still the Wild West,” Levine told insideARM.com. “You read a lot about people getting into trouble for not doing the job their supposed to do, in the way that they are supposed to do it.”

This is what made the idea of developing a set of voluntary standards for the process serving industry a necessary one in Levine’s eyes. “Too often, change seems to come from the actions of a few bad actors – you’re forced to action because of someone else’s bad actions. What we hope to accomplish at the Process Serving Standards Summit is to innovate the industry with carefully thought out standards. We want to show that we can be good stewards of the courts’ and the publics’ trust.”

The two-day Summit will be at the Four Seasons Denver, in Colorado, 10-11 July. Attendees will spend the two days reviewing a rough draft of an earlier set of standards. Each point will be considered, argued, refined, and, no doubt, re-crafted. The hope being the creation of a set of standards, and, essentially, a seal of approval process servers can display.

While there are some standards currently in place for the process serving industry – Levine feels they don’t go far enough. “Most are too basic, and sort of more common-sense-based rather than actual business practices that will assure compliance and accountability. The standards do not take into consideration things like technology and insurance standards. This conference is going to deliver a full-spectrum of industry standards.”

“Attorneys are looking for compliance, accountability, and transparency,” Levine continued. “Companies willing to adopt these standards will prove that they can deliver all three of those bullet points. It will give those process servers an edge over those who won’t adopt these standards. While larger process servers recognize this, the process serving industry in general has been more concerned about themselves than the people they serve.”

Conference registration is currently open, and the reduced conference hotel rate is guaranteed through 9 June.
