A Florida Supreme Court committee called on state and federal lawmakers to regulate the data-collection industry as part of a yearlong investigation into how to balance privacy rights with public access to court documents.
The suggestion is included in a report submitted to the high court by the Committee on Privacy and Court Records, which decided, although not unanimously, that the “policy of openness was paramount” but that, until conditions are met, Internet access to court records should be limited.
“Court records are a rich source of personal information and citizens are justly concerned about access to them,” committee Chairman Jon Mills, a former Florida House speaker who is now a University of Florida law professor, wrote. “The committee believes that we must avoid unnecessary, negligent or deliberate disclosure of information that should be personal or private.”
