A conservative think tank on Monday said Congress should cut federal ties to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, arguing the mortgage finance companies abused their privileges and have had little impact on homeownership.
The Heritage Foundation, in a paper, said lawmakers weighing proposals to stiffen oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac following multibillion-dollar accounting problems should instead consider changes that would place the enterprises on a more level playing field with other financial services companies.
