Three Bid on Australia National Bank Units

DUBLIN, Ireland – As many as three European banks may have submitted bids to purchase National Australia Bank’s two units in Ireland, newspapers reported Friday.

The two major broadsheets in Ireland disagreed about the progress of behind-the-scenes bidding for Northern Bank and National Irish Bank.

National Australia Bank Ltd. had set Thursday as the deadline for bids for both banks, which it insisted would be sold together. Analysts have valued the two around euro 1.2 billion (US$1.55 billion).

The Irish Times identified three banks — Halifax Bank of Scotland, Lloyds TSB and Rabobank — as making confidential bids.
