Greenspan Urges Fannie, Freddie Portfolio Limits

Congress should rein in the growth of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said Thursday.

Greenspan, speaking via satellite to a housing conference in Atlanta, repeated his strong opposition to the unrestrained growth of the two government-sponsored enterprises.

“Huge, highly leveraged GSEs subject to significant interest-rate risk are not conducive to the long-term financial stability that a nation of borrowers requires,” Greenspan said in his prepared remarks.
