In the wake of JPMorgan Chase’s announcement Wednesday that it would cut 1,900 call center jobs in Tampa, industry experts said more job losses are likely here as financial services firms continue to consolidate and trim costs in back-office operations.
The gloomy prediction may have a silver lining: Although Tampa probably will lose more call center jobs, some economic development experts say the Tampa Bay area has proved it can attract more sophisticated, better-paying financial services operations such as those at Depository Trust & Clearing Corp. The New York financial services giant is setting up a regional operation in Tampa.
JPMorgan’s announcement Wednesday came six months after Capital One Financial Corp. said it would eliminate 1,100 call center jobs and close its Tampa operations.
