Collection Agency to Hunt Toll Violators

SAN FRANCISCO — The cash-strapped agency that operates the Golden Gate Bridge has hired a collection agency to contact motorists who failed to pay their tolls when they crossed the famous span into San Francisco.

The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District hopes that turning over about $550,000 in delinquent tolls and $3.2 million in penalties to a company that specializes in securing unpaid debts will help solve its own financial problems. The district faces a deficit that could reach over $70 million over the next five years.
