A state House panel has begun to review a private company’s $1 billion bid to run the state student loan business.
This comes on the heels of a quick decision by the board of the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency to reject the offer from its biggest competitor, Virginia-based Sallie Mae.
But some lawmakers and Gov. Ed Rendell feel the offer deserves more consideration.
“We’ll be taking a look at the general overall concept of the proposal to see how it benefits our efforts here in the commonwealth to help students,” said Al Bowman, policy director for House Appropriations Committee Chairman Brett Feese, R-Lycoming.
