July 1, 2008, marks the effective date of the state law requiring collection agencies to be registered.
Last year, Rhode Island passed S.B. 34, which requires the registration of a debt collection agency that engages in debt collection activities or solicitations and/or advertisements for the right to collect within the state. The deadline for compliance has been reached, as this requirement became effective today, July 1, 2008.
Registration is required if a debt collection agency does any of the following within the state of Rhode Island:
