Commonwealth Financial Systems Inc., a growing Northeastern Pennsylvania-based collection agency, was named the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce’s “Small Business of the Year” award-winner Thursday.

“This is a result of faith, family and hard work,” said John Kotula, president and chief executive officer of Commonwealth.

Commonwealth, which has expanded its work force fivefold over the past three years, was incorporated in July 2001. Three months later it acquired the assets of NCC, a collection agency that served the region for 25 years.

The merger allowed Commonwealth to expand into national markets, increase work force and relocate into a larger facility.
