Australia’s biggest debt collection agency, D&B (Dun & Bradstreet), is calling on credit providers to be more lenient with country consumers.
The company has released figures showing country people are far less likely to default on debts than their city counterparts.
The figures show city consumers are seven times more likely to default on a gas or electricity bill and twice as likely to default on a phone bill.
The company’s chief executive officer, Christine Christian, says lenders should be treating country people differently.
“Those consumer lenders in the city really do need to keep their eye on delinquent payers and credit levels much, much more closely than their counterparts or their customers in the country,” she said.
