WASHINGTON – A senior U.S. Democratic lawmaker on Friday asked the government to release a report on whether the regulator of mortgage finance companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac leaked sensitive information to a newspaper.

Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives panel that oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, wrote the Department of Housing and Urban Development asking it to make public a report by its inspector general on alleged leaks by the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight.

HUD is investigating whether OFHEO improperly gave information to The Wall Street Journal about a disciplinary letter regulators sent the company in February finding fault with accounting systems.
