Gecis, a New Delhi-based call center operator 40 percent owned by General Electric Co., is seeking to buy rivals outside of India as part of its plan to reach $1.2 billion in sales by 2008.

The business, started as a customer-support center for General Electric in 1997, plans acquisitions to lessen its dependence on the Fairfield, Connecticut-based company, which contributed 93 percent of sales in 2004, Chief Executive Pramod Bhasin said in an interview. Companies that deal with debt collection, insurance and human resources are targets, he said.

“We are seeking acquisitions in markets we don’t have great access today and for products that we don’t have,” Bhasin said in New Delhi on May 12. “We could acquire companies with revenue of $100 million to $150 million in the U.S. or the U.K.”
