VANCOUVER, British Columbia – British Columbia agreed to let Maximus Inc. take over provincial medical record-keeping on Thursday, saying safeguards will block the U.S. government from getting access to the private data.

The C$324 million contract with a Canadian unit of the U.S. data firm requires the computerized records be stored in Canada, and will allow the provincial government to take over the subsidiary, Maximus B.C., if the information is improperly released.

The privatization plan sparked uproar this year when critics charged that the USA Patriot Act gave the FBI the power to force foreign units of U.S. companies to supply data on non-Americans without those people knowing it.
