SALEM, OR – Secretary of State Bill Bradbury released a report Tuesday finding that state agencies could improve delinquent debt collections.
State agencies have made progress in improving coordination and technology used in debt collection, as recommended by a 1997 audit report, but further opportunities for improvement include better staffing and oversight.
“Improving collection of money owed to state agencies can help ease the burden on taxpayers and is just common sense,” said Bradbury.
State auditors found that units with the most agent activity had the highest collection rates, and recommended that collection units either increase staffing or reduce caseloads to increase activity on accounts. Additionally, improved oversight of private collection agencies would ensure adequate collection efforts.
