This week, about 700,000 customers of four banks may have had their financial records stolen by bank employees and sold to collection agencies, according to police in Hackensack, N.J. In a separate case across the country but with the same potential for ID theft, a laptop containing the names and Social Security numbers of 16,500 current and former MCI employees was stolen from the car of an MCI financial analyst in Colorado.


These incidents, by the way, didn’t make the national news. That’s how humdrum such crimes have become.
