The justice department has moved to close loopholes in the Debt Collectors Act, under which some attorneys and their debt-collecting agents have refused to register with the industry body and obey the law in chasing up debts.

Lawrence Basset of the justice department told Parliament?s justice committee yesterday that the amendments in the Judicial Matters Amendment Bill would bring all those who acted as debt collectors in line with the law.
