Bankruptcy filings dropped 3.8 percent in 2004, but still exceeded the 1.5 million level first hit in 2002, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts said on Tuesday.
Bankruptcies filed in calendar year 2004 totaled 1.60 million, down from the 1.66 million reported in 2003.
From October through December 2004, or the first quarter of fiscal year 2005, bankruptcy filings totaled 371,688, down 5.5 percent from the first quarter of fiscal 2004, the administrative office said.
