DEERFIELD, IL – Walgreen Co. today said it will continue accepting American Express credit cards. Last month, Walgreens had announced it would stop accepting American Express cards on Jan. 14.
A new, long-term agreement will be mutually beneficial to both companies and will allow Walgreens to continue serving its customers who want to use the American Express card at all Walgreens drugstores nationwide, along with Walgreens.com, Walgreens Mail Service, Walgreens Home Care and Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy.
Walgreens believes in providing excellent service and has decided to allow its customers to make their own choice about which card to use when shopping at Walgreens.
Walgreen Co. is the nation’s largest drugstore chain with fiscal 2004 sales of $37.5 billion. The company operates 4,683 stores in 44 states and Puerto Rico, and plans to open about 450 new stores nationwide in fiscal 2005. Walgreens also provides additional services to pharmacy patients and prescription drug plans through Walgreens Health Initiatives (a pharmacy benefits manager), Walgreens Mail Service, Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy and Walgreens Home Care.
