Though Iowa is a leader in collection of child support payments owed, about 38 percent of those court-ordered payments aren’t being paid, a legislative oversight committee was warned Monday.


“You just keep working at it,” said Jeanne Nesbit, who heads child support collection efforts at the Department of Human Services.


State officials have strong tools to enforce payment by those who live in Iowa, including seizing income tax refunds and having support payments automatically deducted from paychecks. Enforcement is trickier when the parent lives elsewhere, Nesbit said.
