Britain’s competition watchdog said on Tuesday fees charged by members of credit card association MasterCard UK, including most major banks, infringed competition rules and resulted in higher retail prices.

But MasterCard International said it strongly disagreed with the findings from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and would appeal the decision.

It said the decision, if allowed to stand, would lead to reduced services to cardholders and to an increase in cardholder fees and charges. It could also make it difficult for many consumers to get credit cards.
