The number of people looking for help managing their debts nearly doubled during May compared with the previous year, a debt charity said today.
The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) said a total of 25,000 people rang its helpline for advice during the month, up from 13,000 in May 2004.
It added that the number of people calling for help had been well above the levels seen in 2004 so far every month this year.
Around one in every three people who calls the helpline goes on to have an in-depth counselling session with one of the group’s members of staff.
