Denver officials want to crack down on scofflaws who ignore city fines by referring past-due amounts to a collection agency and sticking the delinquents with the cost.

Currently, many who get parking tickets simply ignore the increasingly stern warning letters from the city. They run the risk of getting booted, but many escape scot-free from any penalty.

Denver now employs an outside law firm to help it go after roughly $2.6 million in unpaid fines and fees each year. However, no fines from parking and traffic violations – which could total in the millions of dollars – are pursued that way.

A proposal approved Wednesday by the Denver City Council’s finance committee would allow the city to aggressively go after all overdue fines by adding the collection fee to the final bill and, in some cases, suing for uncollected amounts. The city plans to hire a collection agency to help.
