Some complaining of being treated like “dead beats,” current and former citizens of the City of Falls Church (VA) more than six months delinquent in personal property tax payments began last week being contacted by a tough-talking private collection agency contracted by the City Treasurer.
According to reports, City Hall has been inundated by citizens howling about unfair treatment, claiming they hadn’t been properly forewarned they were in arrears before having their accounts sent to a collector.
City Treasurer Bob Morrison retained the private agency, the Nex Bank company, for the first time this spring because the number of delinquent accounts has grown to 2,959 (for taxes due over the last five years), an alarmingly high number given the City has a total population of just over 10,000.
