One of Pittsburgh’s largest employers plans to open a second call center, potentially locating hundreds of employees outside the city limits.

Real estate sources say PNC Financial Services Group Inc. is looking for 70,000 square feet of office space for its second call center and is looking at space in Washington County.

To date, the bulk of PNC’s business operations — including its existing call center — are based Downtown between the U.S. Steel Tower, Firstside Center and 2 PNC Plaza.

“The fact that they’re looking outside the city highlights the importance of the city being able to restructure its tax base, which is currently before the legislature, so we can make it competitive and attractive for companies to build in the city right now,” said city councilman Sala Udin, who represents Downtown.

Mr. Udin, who is not involved in the site search, said the center is “clearly good for the region,” adding wryly that the financial institution could be considering “Taiwan or Florida.”

PNC confirmed that it’s looking to open a second site, but wouldn’t specify where. A real estate source familiar with the search said PNC wants to open a call center outside the Downtown area for security reasons. He also said one of the requirements for the call center was parking for 500.
