The saturated mobile phone industry in Japan has led companies to devise ways to acquire new markets with the use of the ubiquitous cell phones. NTT DoCoMo, the world’s second largest cell-phone operator is to all set to turn its FeliCa technology enabled phones into credit cards.
It has made the strategic move into the financial services business by acquiring a 34 percent stake in Sumitomo Mitsui Card Company and launching an integrated credit card account, which can be used via its FeliCa mobile handset. DoCoMo will invest about Yen 98 bn in a landmark agreement, which represents the first attempt by a network operator to roll out banking services under its own brand.
