IPayment outsources so many aspects of its business that at first glance a person might ask the company: What exactly do you do?

What iPayment does is provide credit- and debit-card processing services to small merchants, an underserved segment of the card-processing space.

Individually, small businesses don’t bring in lots of cash. According to iPayment’s Web site, the small merchants it serves typically generate less than $250,000 of charge volume per year and have an average transaction value of $75.

But put enough small merchants together and you have yourself a steady flow of revenue.

“If you’re serving 10 small businesses, nobody cares,” said analyst Colin Gillis of Adams Harkness. “When you have 100,000 small businesses, suddenly it’s a pretty good business.”
