America Online Inc. abruptly closed its Maitland customer-call center Tuesday, terminating 471 workers in a move the giant Internet service provider termed a response to market conditions.


The 3-year-old call center, which filled 47,000 square feet of office space on North Keller Road, was opened to meet what was then a growing demand for customer service. But the company has lost subscribers since, and AOL spokesman Nicholas Graham said that has contributed to a diminished need for call-center workers.
