Australia – Debt collection agencies have been put on notice over unscrupulous practices within their trade.

But new guidelines set by Consumer Affairs Victoria have been criticised by credit legal services who say they will be ignored. CAV yesterday released a set of rules the industry should follow, including:

  • NOT contacting people before 7.30am or after 9pm unless they are shift workers).

  • NOT contacting people on public holidays.

  • NOT contacting people more than three times a week and not more than 10 times in a month.

  • NOT camping outside a person’s house or workplace.

  • NOT having first contact with a person face-to-face.

Consumer Affairs Minister John Lenders said consumer advocates had exposed practices that were unfair and detrimental to consumer interests but not strictly illegal.
