The East Pennsboro Township (Pa.) Board of Commissioners is currently accepting bids from debt collection agencies to go after money owed to the town, according to local paper The Sentinel.

Township Manager John Pietropaoli said that a collection agency should be chosen by mid-summer.

Pietropaoli noted that there is currently about $550,000 in unpaid money owed to the town, mostly unpaid sewer and trash bills, and debt arising from foreclosure, bankruptcy, and sheriff’s sales.

In justifying the move to hire a third party debt collection agency, Pietropaoli said, “You either pay the percentages to have a collection agency collect for you, or place liens on properties.” But placing liens on property is often expensive and time-consuming, especially now in the deflated government budget environment.
