HELENA, MT – The state of Montana's first attempt to use a collection agency to help collect delinquent taxes appears to be working.
“They started sending letters a number of weeks ago and we have gotten a very good response in collections,” said Neil Peterson, administrator of the customer service center in the state Department of Revenue.

He was referring to tax bills from the collection agency that look much like magazine subscription forms. They are a legitimate effort to get past due accounts collected, Peterson told The Livingston Enterprise in a telephone interview.
“The state has $53 million (in) total accounts receivable and about half of that we contracted to the collection agency,” Peterson said.
GC Services Limited Partnership, based in Oklahoma City, won a one-year contract, effective Oct. 1.
Peterson said this is the first time the state agency has used an outside agency to collect back taxes.
