The expansion is required because West's client base has grown, spokesman David Pleiss said.

Kim Turner, Universal City's development services director, told the San Antonio Express News that growth of one of the area's largest employers is welcome.

"It's a very sophisticated center, with incoming calls only," Turner said. "We feel it's advantageous for workers."

Call centers have found San Antonio to be a dependable site for expansion, and the jobs they provide — many of them lower-skilled and part-time — have filled an important economic niche.
