European accounts receivable management giant Intrum Justitia announced late last week that it had won a contract to collect for an agency in the government of the United Kingdom, a first for the ARM company.

Stockholm, Sweden-based Intrum said that it will be collecting on behalf of the UK’s Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) focusing on outstanding Social Security payments and corporate accounts. Intrum will also be working with the Child Support Agency to ensure non-resident parents are making their payments.

The government collection contract is a first for Intrum in the UK, according to Owen James, Intrum’s UK managing director. “Government collections is a small part of what we do in the UK,” James told insideARM. The company does have a “mixed picture of activity” in the rest of Europe, said James, including contracts with local governments across the continent.

James also noted that the contract win is part of a larger shift in the way the UK government interacts with private contractors. After a competitive procurement process, Intrum was not only awarded the specific contract but also included in a framework within the government which will allow it to go after other work.

“This addition to the framework will open up other UK agencies for us,” said James.

Intrum Justitia, founded in 1923, counts 2,900 employees in 22 countries.
