A cheap alternative is Magic Jack (and no- I dont work for em- I just use it)- MJ is cheap to get and a change is 5 bucks. Anyway, you're not stuck with the problem.

Suggesting cheap VOIP services on a site where debtors lurk, probably isn't the best idea. These services, in the hands of savvy debtors, can turn your collection calls into unobtrusive emails. Meanwhile, the debtor has a cell number (that you will likely never obtain) that they use as their regular phone. The VOIP line is simply a decoy, which is the debtors “official” number for credit reporting and other transactions that may appear in public databases.

Even cheaper than Magic Jack is using Google Voice.  It's free and easy to use.  And you can keep the same “official” phone number forever without paying a dime.  All the annoying collection calls go straight to email and you can just ignore them.  Google Voice is going to be the biggest problem debt collectors are going to have to deal with in the future.

I have the same name of a deadbeat who lives in a different city.  Now I don't care if my name is John Smith.  It's the skip tracer's job to get the right guy.  I have a progression that I follow with these idiots.  1.  Nicely tell them, “Nope, I never lived in Grand Rapids”.

    2.  Tell them again, right name, wrong person, go away.

    3.  Introduce them to Mr. Fox 40 (my basketball refereeing whistle).  Yell

    I rarely get called a 4th time.Smile

That's very creative Richard, did it take you the whole 13 months since the last post to think up that bit of wit or were you working on other things in the meantime?

I don't see this as a problem at all.  If someone doesn't want to pay their bills they are not going to pay their bills and basically nothing legal I am going to say is going to change that. That's where I see the state of the business we work in.

You've obviously never seen a professional debt collector in action.

I have gotten phone calls from a few differant collection agencies for people that I don’t or have ever associated with and I just sue them. They know they are breaking the law after the first phone call to you and you state to them that this is the wrong number. They are so desperate for commissions or bonuses, that their greed seems to always get the best of them.

A current violator of this is 1st National Collections. I am currently suing them now in Texas small claims court. They have a “DIKE” attorney by the name of Robbie Malone- I call her “Rob” for short.

Anyway, I will post when they settle or I lose- either way. If I lose, I will post the amount of judgment they get on me that they will never, ever see. It’s almost too funny they waste money on attorney’s fees that they will never see back.

Only deadbeats consumers will used VOIP to void paying a debt. We as a collection agency could care less about the VOIP because when we buy the debt and hit their credit report with a hard inquire the consumer will call and sometime we tell them only contact us by mail and that will chap their rear end.

Although i am aware this is an older thread and actually not quite sure if the creator of this thread is still seeking an answer . But i will try to do my best to give you an answer in which adapts to this situation.

The process of location information (skip tracing) is agitating in the aspect of gathering wrong information. To have 3-5 voice mails on your phone for somebody you dont know is extremely annoying . & on our end of the handset , having left 3-5 voice mails, on 3-5 different occasions , wasting 3-5 different instances of not only employer’s money but also the employee trying to make a living .

We hate calling wrong numbers as much as you hate us calling your number.

Whether that be total wrong number , no longer in contact with the person , ex spouse , ex relative , its a negative situation for all parties involved.

Unfortunately not only being a debt collector for several years , i have also had this issue affect me in my personal life . All i can say is you always have the option of changing your number, which is what i have done , several times . At this day & age they have used up pretty much all the numbers that they could and they have started recycling numbers . Just hope next time you sign up for a cellphone or landline you get somebody who resolved all of their outstanding issues before changing their phone number .
