When it comes to medical debt collection, Dr. Hubert Fu has had enough.

“You outsource your healthcare collections to someone else, they don’t necessarily have your sensitivities in mind,” says Fu, a practicing anesthesiologist in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. “As physicians, our most important, irreplaceable asset is our patients. Without patients, we don’t exist. Debt M.D. is really a debt collection agency born out of my frustration with the process I witnessed time and again with how my patients were treated during the medical debt collection process.”

Fu, who has been practicing medicine since 2004, says every interaction with patients – be it in the Operating Room or on the telephone – needs to include compassion, respect and understanding.

“Healthcare receivables are no exception,” he says. “Yet far too often, we see our most important asset – our patients – being treated in a reprehensible manner during the healthcare collections process.”

The resulting negative publicity and loss of revenue can be devastating for physicians and healthcare institutions alike, according to Fu.

“It only takes one bad experience, one bad story, to really damage your brand and your reputation,” he says. “Being on the inside of this industry, seeing all the mistakes that were being made, the business being lost, the complaints from patients … I knew there was a better way to do healthcare collections.”

Fu founded Debt M.D., based in Dallas/Fort Worth, with the promise to clients that his agency would provide great results, reduce complaints and improve patient retention by doing healthcare collections differently.

“Having spent years living through the healthcare billing and collection cycle from start to finish, we can translate that firsthand, insider knowledge into a unique approach that provides great results and – most important – keeps the patient-provider relationship intact,” Fu says. “As a physician, if you don’t understand your patient’s medical condition, you can’t treat it. The same is true of healthcare collections. That’s why Debt M.D.’s approach is different than anyone else in the industry.”

In order to turn his vision into reality, Fu hand-picked a management team that both understood the ever-changing healthcare collection landscape and bought into his vision of a patient-centered approach.

“It’s unlike anything people in our industry have ever seen before,” says Aryn Manning, Debt M.D.’s Chief Operating Officer. “I’ve been doing this for 20 years, and I’ve never seen anything like it. But that’s the value Dr. Fu brings – he knows exactly what our clients want, because he’s walking in their shoes every single day.”

Fu realizes some industry observers may be skeptical of his venture, given how different Debt M.D.’s approach to healthcare collections is.

“My answer to skeptics is simple,” he says. “Give us a shot. We’ll accept any challenge, no matter how large or small the account. The results speak for themselves.”

Speaking to his colleagues in the Dallas/Fort Worth area about his new business venture has led Fu to realize the Debt M.D. healthcare collections model is long overdue.

“Once other doctors hear about it, they want in,” he says. “They get it right away. As a client, you want a healthcare collection agency that’s going to understand your needs like nobody else can. Being a practicing physician, I’m able to do that.”
